LG G4

After the most successful G3, LG was expected to turn with its G4. appearance changes slightly marked its predecessor, the new spearhead of the Korean manufacturer would own, among others, an excellent photo sensor 16MP together with a detachable user interface. CHARACTERISTICS operating system (OS) Android OS version tested 5.0 (Lollipop) Diagonal 5.5 inches Display resolution 2560 x 1440 Weight 155 g Dimensions 148.9 x 76.1 x 9.8 mm More features ▸ Face to face PRESENTATION LG is back with its new flagship, the G4. No ultra fine here or featherweight, glass or aluminum strips, and no more than sealed hull. The brand is in line with a physical almost as imposing as the G3, this time adding a few more curves and a touch of eccentricity with a hull coating genuine leather (several finishes available). Under the original hood is a chip hexacœur Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 (quad-core ARM Cortex-A57 1.8 GHz and a double heart ARM Cortex-A53), RAM 3GB storage capacity of 32 GB expandable through the addition of a microSD card (up to an additional 128 GB), Wi-Fi a / b / g / n / ac dual-band, Bluetooth 4.1, NFC, 4G LTE compatibility category 6 ( maximum rate of 300 Mb / s) or a removable battery with a capacity of 3000 mAh.   lg-g4-labor face.jpg The picture part is provided by two new sensors developed by LG itself: one 8MP front, the other 16MP rear with optical stabilization and development "Laser". If Android 5.0 Lollipop is present in the animal, the Google OS leaves rather speak Korean Optimus UI interface. An OS displayed on a WQHD IPS screen of 5.5 inches (diagonal of 14 cm, for a definition of 2560 x 1440 pixels). The LG G4 smartphone with a leather finish is marketed in 699 € price. A version with metallic back is also present, for a suggested price slightly lower, at 649 €. Again, LG stands out from its competitors, since this starting position is less expensive than all direct competitors "brand A" (GS6, iPhone 6 Plus One M9). ERGONOMICS AND DESIGN 4/5 This is the story of a brand that decides not to follow the trend of slim, super-light and prefers to concentrate primarily on a good grip. And it is won. The G4 is the high-end mobile new generation that provides the best grip, on par with the HTC One M9. To achieve this goal, the Korean company has decided to keep the well marked and thick body of G3, by providing a few more or less welcome touches.   lg-g4-dos-tq.jpg lg-g4-face.jpg The primary interest to maintain a curved smartphone wide measurements - not forgetting that there LG brings a 5.5-inch screen - is to provide a mobile terminal which is good in the Catch and we never afraid to let it slide. The front rids itself again and again physical buttons, relegated to the back to fall in the index.   lg-g4-ouvert.jpg lg-g4-profile main.jpg The slight curvature of the front, beyond the nice visual look that gives the product, clearly plays a positive role in the ergonomics and can even perceive the G4 slightly less than it is mastodon really. The back easily pulls out to let the user achieve removable battery, micro SIM slot and microSD. Simple observation will interest many Android users frustrated in 2015: the G4 is currently the only high-end terminal of the year, which allows access to the battery.   lg-g4-profiup.jpg lg-g4-surpiqures.jpg Let us quickly look leather finish; a choice that undeniably a small effect. LG seems to have worked hard to offer a genuine leather - and therefore a real differentiation of style on the circuit - rather than apply a finish "plasticuir" as liked to make Samsung until there is very little of time. The seams are real and some smell faintly perceptible skin is present. However, we noted a slight fairly rapid deterioration of the leather back. Transported a few days in a pocket of jeans jacket and classic, the hull is already showing small signs of fatigue on the corners. It will also seek to limit the strokes on the structure. Leather, in essence, can score and therefore quickly become damaged. The metal shell seems to favor over the long term (and the model is cheaper).   lg-g4-up.jpg Finally, as you may have seen him in our dedicated section, the G4 heated surface and thus in contact with the user; more than his fellow high-end 2015 when duly requested (photo to the chain, game, video FHD / UHD). However, conversely to a HTC One M9 whose aluminum structure propagates - unfortunately for the hand of the user - the heat transfer throughout the terminal G4 limit the heating zone to the top of the product. In fact, the discomfort is minimal and restricted to use in landscape mode. In addition, the leather allows a less abrupt sensation. To see and check on the metal back, which we have not tested yet. SCREEN 5/5 Once again, LG birth to a beautiful touchscreen. The new generation of IPS panel allows, like the LG promises in its marketing pitch and as we were able to verify our eyes and our probes, contrast much better (1546: 1 on average, 86% more contrast than the G3 !), very deep blacks and brightness, which passes by a maximum of 540 cd / m2, one of the best luminosities market.     COLORIMETRY 3.3 The only small negatives on this new screen just a color rendering sometimes a little too bright (temperature to 7800 K) and therefore slightly less natural, but flatter probably moult retinas. We are not, however, in a report type "AMOLED-crazy" and the colors of joy burst remains moderate. Colorimetry takes hold in the waters of the G3 that is left in absolute excellent result, but to date, there are several references offering a little more accurate colors, the Samsung Galaxy S6 and iPhone 6 Plus.   lg-g4-ecran.jpg For responsiveness, we noted a touch delay of 100 ms, against half for the G3. On the gifted student in 2014, the family G happening in the average mobile in 2015. The reading experience itself remains the same, namely extraordinary. Normal with such a definition. If it is clearly not the best mobile display the time, G4 screen is still in the very top of the basket and has strong qualities. See our full review of the IPS WQHD screen LG G4 on our dedicated page. INTERFACE AND NAVIGATION 5/5 Just like its next door neighbor in Korea, LG also did some cleaning in the software part to go as far as possible to the point. Some may mock the lack of enthusiasm from LG to offer applications and functions that come out a bit unconventional, but again, LG limit risk taking. The G4 runs Android 5 Lollipop and features Optimus UX 4.0 interface that covers all mobile brand products. We find some useful tools such as the ability to view two applications simultaneously by sharing the screen; Smart Bulletin, which is a page dedicated to organize ourselves and in which we can grow information, notifications, application widget; deep settings for wireless connectivity to configure exactly how you want to use Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and / or 4G. Obviously, double-tap on the screen to enter / exit standby and the Knock Code are still in the game, like all Google applications. The assembly takes place in an atmosphere that will not be to everyone's taste. If Samsung was able to backtrack in the flashy side with its new TouchWiz, LG will likely attempt a breakthrough. But then, what is this famous chip Snapdragon 808 preferred to a 810 who left a highly perishable remember the brand with the G Flex 2 (heating, ultra clamped performance while stabilizing, autonomy discounts ...)? Well this platform is doing with honors. She not only scratched from his vocabulary the word slowdown, but it also provides consistent performance and duration. All made under pressure from one screen to the inordinate definition, cut to sweat all SoC. If marketing issue, this choice is not snoring, regarding the user experience and overall responsiveness, LG's decision proves largely paid and relevant. MULTIMEDIA 5/5 Video playback is excellent on this bill G4. LG offers an integrated video player in the Android gallery. This allows among others to pass a normal reading in window mode to perform actions on the smartphone without a stop viewing. On a 5.5 inch screen, this option is a little sense (more on tablet, anyway).    VIDEO AUDIO The G4 headphone is generally in the average. It does not issue a monstrous power, but it still provides power to any helmet. Furthermore, it reveals rather faithful and provides a dynamic range - the difference between the loudest sound and the softest sounds - correct. The separation between the left and right channels and also satisfactory. With a single loudspeaker at the rear of the terminal, the output can sometimes be obstructed when holding the G4 to hand, but the product bend limit discomfort. Mediums are properly restored, but the highs are absent. Let us remember that the speaker is powerful and it does not suffer from distortion.   lg-g4-jack.jpg The ITE provided with the LG G4 does not shine by their sound performance. Indeed, the reproduction is imprecise and focused on the media, generating an aggressive sound. There is also a panic low extremes to come, according listened mix, hide the rest of the bass and lower midrange. The lavished comfort is decent, even if the cable is sensitive to contact noises. Little more significant, however, LG heal building its ITE, with a main cable braiding and some wearing comfort.   lg g4 game THU The platform Snapdragon 808 comes with a graphics chip Adreno 418. This small torque provides most, namely the ability to play very smoothly on all games from the Google Play Store, even the most resource-seekers , and thus makes the G4 a very good machine to play in mobility. Graphics side, however, we prefer that are capable of displaying the Galaxy S6 / S6 Edge and even products with a Snapdragon 810 with Adreno 430 graphical environment remains clean and among one of the more advanced market, but found few jaggies (aliasing) on most of the contours and, WQHD, it does not forgive. As for the heating of the product, we have noted no impact on performance during prolonged use; And that's good. PICTURE 5/5 One thing is certain, LG makes every effort on this G4 to try to become the best cameraphone of the moment and dethrone the Galaxy S6. Are you able? Overall, difficult for the hour to award the title of champion of the general public photophonie. However, the G4 offers in some areas a more successful experience as the monster from Samsung. Recall if necessary LG changes its tune for the photo and now designs its own sensor 16MP optical stabilization. The outbreak of the photos is still dazzling through the operation, among others, development of laser technology (developed by STMicroelectronics). In light environment, the G4 features a rendering of high quality and can clearly make a par with the Galaxy S6. However, sometimes there is the appearance of noise while the terminal could well do without. This is probably a software processing business since remembers that until then, LG had a tendency to too smooth over his shots. Suddenly, the S6 custody a short head start here, for rendering a cleaner hair. But that does not diminish the overall quality of bluffing G4, which is a little better than iPhone 6 Plus and marks a real break with the G3. Rupture is confirmed with shooting in low light. By opting for a larger sensor photosites than average and an aperture of f / 1.8, LG G4 gives the ability to pick up more light and with a lot of gusto. Unlike the sometimes result obtained in a bright environment, whether in auto or manual (see below), the G4 is much more discreet about the noise in night photography. The exhibition is a little low for our tastes in auto and manual clearly speak the powder contained in the sensor. LG then offers made more balanced and better than Samsung. Caution, however, when the flash comes in, the G4 is missing the boat, with a tendency to burn too scenes.   lg-g4-capteur.jpg In this report very satisfactory overall adds ever more refined picture interface and more comprehensive, LG has decided to integrate a large number of manual settings. Focus, speed, ISO sensitivity, white balance, exposure are all parameters that can be finely adjusted now. The S6, for its part, does not offer as disengagement. The use of these options is simple and intuitive and with a little practice, we quickly supplant the Full Auto Mode G4, especially in night photography. Note also that the G4 offers capturing photos in RAW format. The addition of a microSD card then makes sense when you know the weight of a picture in this format which does not degrade the image in subsequent alterations. On the video side, LG is on a par with Samsung through a successful stabilization in Full HD and UHD quality fashion (5 minutes maximum uptake into an outlet for this mode). As for the sensor before, if the quality of shots is present, with good light and fast and smooth behavior, we remain somewhat unsatisfied. For an 8 MP, the report still lacks some precision.
