HUAWEI P9
After a perfectible P8 launched in 2015, which had definitely put Huawei on the sphere of high-end watch very closely, the Chinese giant logically is back with a P9 which maintains the same dual-orientation design / photo and also inducts a partnership new Leica. The menu design of the alliance of two seniors and a concept of double innovative image capture which ultimately only the side "niche" proves excellent.

PRESENTATION
One might think that Huawei will focus more on the high end, but the Chinese company still much to occupy all possible fields. Only she seeks above all to hold its own strong challenger to the top of the mobile cart and thus goes on a year outputs of smartphones to over 500 euros: P8, S Mate, Mate now 8 and P9. Positioned to 549 € in its version with 32GB of storage (25GB accessible), said P9 we test here is therefore to hold € 100 less than the equivalent S Mate format.

So we have a 5.2-inch LCD IPS appliance slab Full HD (diagonal 13.2 cm for a definition of 1920 x 1080 pixels) that offers mobile chip Huawei's latest generation, the Kirin 955. This HiSilicon last has a quad-core architecture ARM Cortex-A72 clocked at 2.5 GHz and a second quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 1.8GHz. It is associated with a RAM of 3 GB. The storage capacity is expandable with the addition of a microSD card, up to an additional 200 GB and beyond. Photovideo capture, the center of attention, is made on the back of a double module designed in conjunction with Leica, each in Sony 12MP sensor. The classic, the other monochrome, can operate together, that the latter can help the first in its light and color composition, whereas a true black and white is available via the monochrome sensor.
P9 stacks the usual wireless connectivity of high-end, such as Wi-Fi a / b / c / n / ac, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS and GLONASS, NFC and a network compatibility 4G LTE Category 6 (theoretical maximum throughput up to 300 Mb / s), while the product back incorporates a fingerprint reader. The set runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow covered with Huawei Emotion UI new interface, version 4.1.
P9 is marketed from April 29, 2016, while a version with a full HD 5.5-inch (diagonal 14 cm), 64 GB of storage and 4 GB of RAM selects the June 1, 2016 to land France, the recommended price of € 699.
ERGONOMICS AND DESIGN 4/5
elegant and consistent mixture between P8 and S Mate, P9 opts for the slow evolution and Huawei remains in the natural fiber without daring break. Finally, only the presence of the dual sensor photo conform to a design rule started from Ascend Mate 7. Here we have an aluminum block similar to that offered by Apple on its iPhone, a photo section encased in a glass strip and a front face made of all glass. Front face which has moreover an occupancy rate of the surface by the screen of a little over 72%. Good coverage, equivalent to the now customary Huawei working on touchscreen of 5.2 inches.

On the back, we clearly found the "leg" of Mate S, which fires off the appearance of a fingerprint reader, hitherto absent from the series P. Placed to fall within the index, it fully meets its office, is instantly and work without fail quickly. It is possible to exit the standby smartphone simply by asking the enrolled finger on the reader, but also to take a picture, go back, navigate between apps ... malignant recovery capabilities Mate S drive, yet it .

The grip has slightly gained comfort from P8, Huawei still refining its beveled edges for a nice grip. The physical buttons are well placed, as for right handers. Note that the headphone jack makes this year's journey above the bottom edge.

But in heated side is another lemonade. Yes, P9 rises in temperature and reaches up to 39.6 degrees on several parts of its structure. This happens after a big game or burst pictures but not video (thank you, no doubt, to the lack of capturing 4K). Heating spreads over a portion of the front of the mobile, warming substantially the thumb of the user in landscape mode.

Luck in the adventure, the temperature drops drastically in less than 15 seconds once past the strong resource deployment.

SCREEN 4/5
Huawei accustomed us for 2 years now to push each generation of mobile products, such as Apple often, the limits of the intrinsic qualities of the LCD IPS panels. Without spraying display related records, far from it, the P9 is still part of a now excellent screen tradition. The Full HD panel, on such a display screen offers a display density of 423 pixels per inch (326 ppi for iPhone 6s, or 534 for a Galaxy S7, for example), which perfectly suit n ' any human eye to enjoy all the content available on such a product (video, text, web, photos).
If the mechanical P8 rolled in his time with high contrast of 1500: 1, the P9 back somewhat with a nevertheless very honest way of contrast 1228: 1. Added to this are a fairly deep black (without reaching the abyssal made an AMOLED screen like the GS7, of course) and the proper management of reflections, with an average rate of light reflection on the screen 14% . Note that the best specimens of discipline are placed below 10%. P9 however remains readable indoors and outdoors, but carefully avoid the direct sunlight, so as not to bother to read some parts of the screen.
COLORIMETRY
3
Color management is relatively equivalent to that of P8, that is very good with an average Delta E - the difference between the color display of the smartphone and perfect colors, which must be as close as possible to 0 - capping 3 (against 3.1 for the elder) and a balance of rendering. However, the display drift a bit in its White. Having been able to cross several P9 in the hands of our colleagues, it seems that the P9 randomly offers a screen a little too hot ... or too cold, which was the case for our copy. Huawei has a color temperature management tool, which we provide a screenshot below, in case, and that allowed us to achieve, at best, a temperature of 7198 Kelvin. What greatly diminish the bluish drift.
Note also that colorimetry never moves playing here with the temperature. At least at the global, because it can happen that some tones express a little too much, but always in imperceptible levels for all comers.
Huawei-p9-screen-temperature.jpg
Touch responsiveness side, the IPS panel is not at the P8, but maintains a behavior acceptable bill, with a touch delay of 60 ms (market average over 85 ms, 35 ms to P8) and a time latency of 18ms. In short, a P9 who joins a platoon of twenty smartphones very good record overall, without going tu almost perfect iPhone or Galaxy S.
INTERFACE AND NAVIGATION 5/5
The Mate 8 was launched with the Android interface for home, Emotion UI 4.0 and now the P9 landed with version 4.1 in the engine. You guessed it, there is almost no difference between the user experience related devices, it is mainly the use of the fingerprint reader as a navigation element, as seen above. We therefore propose to find our full review of Mate 8 to learn more about the software using this P9, but essentially it is always an interface without application drawer, like on Apple iOS and where all the mobile world ranks on the home pages.
test-Huawei-P9-os-cap.jpg
The interface can be changed using themes and Huawei multiplies the possible interactions with fingers, knuckles (yes) and is found throughout the application suite Google (Gmail, Play Store, Maps, Hangouts, YouTube, Drive, Chrome ...) when the engine starts.
Ray performance, the P9 and Kirin 955 latest generation ensure smooth navigation in any circumstance. We noted 2 or 3 slowdowns when applications are piling up at the beginning of our test, but this has never played. And no matter if Huawei does not exceed the now sacrosanct barrier of 100 000 points on the test Antutu raw power, since the user experience is proving excellent and sufficient power for that matter.
MULTIMEDIA 5/5
Beautiful screen, far, fast video player, but ultra limited option, the P9 is a good machine to play back motion pictures, but still missing the boat on the native compatibility with AVI format. This therefore will require you to go through a third party application from Google Play Store to be relatively quiet on the media pane.
VIDEO
AUDIO
The headphone output of Huawei P9 is practically flawless. The distortion is kept at almost zero, the dynamic range is very wide and the separation of well marked channels. Only small downside, a power slightly below what we like to find on high-end, but not much.
test-Huawei-p9-jack.jpg
The speaker, for his part, if not incredible, is doing all the same without too much damage. The power is not insane, but this will limit the distortion and produce an acceptable sound, though as often, a little too focused on the high part of the spectrum. Located on the lower end, it will never be obstructed during handling, a good point.
Huawei p9 game
THU
The chip Kirin 955 features the same graphics chip Mali T-880 quad-core than the Kirin 950 that the team Mate 8. The result is similar: overall good fluidity even on demanding titles resources, quality graphics to clearly the increase compared to P8, pixelization (aliasing) almost missing in 3D ... all good in the Catch to enjoy all the games of the Google Store, simple as pushed.
PICTURE 4/5
Huawei is therefore trying a new photo revolution, after that, technically nipped in the bud, the RGBW sensor P8 last year. Do do not wait any longer: yes, this dual RGB + Monochrome sensor is in some ways a success. The monochrome unit actually comes back camera effort conventional module, both in color rendering that level of detail and in low light.
test-Huawei-p9-capteur.jpg
But if you have followed the story, the P9 contains a different capacity, that of capturing black and white with real gray levels through its monochrome module. The result is stunning and you can clearly hear the paw of the association with Leica in the overall rendering of the clearer and richer image on classic color party. P9 is quickly reveals the companion of choice for all lovers of the legendary German brand and its black and white, who want to fit in their pocket an additional connection device. Only too bright scenes find the limits of this extraordinary module for the mobile market.

ARTICLE RECOMMENDED: What does actually double the Huawei P9 Module
Despite its qualities, the P9 can reach the level of a Galaxy S7 and this is where the complaints. First, in low light capture is insufficient and too difficult to use most of the time; are still observed a slight latency in the image trigger in all circumstances and we are a little far even an iPhone, a GS7 or LG G4 in the field; monochrome module can not filming, as it can not take advantage of all modes and options (but Pro mode is available); the interface is in progress, but still room for improvement, we feel as much influence as Leica Huawei and the mixture is still a bit messy. Another small mistake, easily correctable: in landscape mode, options and settings pro mode does not tip over and remain in portrait ...
Find the Huawei P9 in color and black and white face competition in our Face to Face Photo.
In video, the rear module has no optical stabilization, but the digital support remains solid and Full HD creations are of decent quality. The module before 8MP suffers a bit in low light (latency and persistence, but not prohibitive) but in ideal conditions, it makes a great companion of self-portrait.
SELF 4/5
From the official presentation, Huawei did not hide his game: P9 may hold a day in intensive use and a day and a half in basic use. In practice, we observe the same behavior. On our general autonomy test protocol via our aim, P9 has an endurance of 24:09, similar to that of a Galaxy S6, almost a day and a half, in fact. In video playback, the terminal as it expires in the waters of GS6, with a playing time of 9:39 flows via Netflix. Huawei forces on the eve of P9 is strong at the height of the last jewels of the mark (8 Mate, Mate S). Caution, however, the intense activity seems more encumber the battery as common use. In game or web browsing with a batch of active apps in the background, you quickly lose the north of the beautiful autonomy. All this still seems linked to a general optimization work yet to perfect.
Compatible with the quick charge (with a supplied stand or charger offering 2 Amps), the P9 can refuel in less than 90 minutes on a full cycle. Without being a tenor of autonomy, P9 can therefore absorb some power, heterogeneous uses and provide an honorable endurance.
The phone side P9
Huawei is one of the few manufacturers of Android smartphones to offer a contact management detaching at least a minimum of essential strict Base Google. So can anyone here directly from the scanner directory business card for integration into an existing form or create a new one from the scan, or integrate Messenger database. That's already a little provided that the simple email list + phones.
The grip network is excellent, from what we could judge for several days of practice and P9 show is particularly good to catch up a network in distress during passages in disaster areas in cells. Same story for Wi-Fi, the powerful grip. Huawei also fits into this terminal a Wi-Fi + mode to jump from Wi-Fi to mobile data depending on the structure and power of the various networks. But be careful if your Wi-Fi is not folichon, invoice data can quickly climb.
calls side, as on all the latest flagship of Huawei, the sound is clear on both sides of the conversation. For navigation, the Kirin 955 incorporates a GPS module with a high velocity with a first specific fix in less than 10 seconds every time.
Please note that the French distribution P9 no current plans to double SIM version, unlike other markets where the beast is also expanding. Too bad for fans of Multicard.
